The DM's Diaries - A look into the imagination and work of a d&d DM
Hi!
I have decided to create a blog to elaborate upon my work as a DM and to share ideas and inspiration with other tabletop hobbyists. This is my first blog....ever....so please allow for some time for me to collect some XP and earn a few much needed levels. I also will use this platform as a way for me to improve upon my writing and will perhaps, from time to time, share short stories and others texts, all RPG-related, with those who might be interested. As I am from Norway, English is my second language so bear with me!
I have quite extensive experience as a DM though, starting way back in 1990 with Basic and then the Expert Dungeons and Dragons, progressing (at least it was percieved as progress at the time) into AD&D 2nd edition, going further into system complexity with MERP, discovering the White Wolf universe and playing as mages, vampires, changelings and what-nots i a World of Darkness and, in the end, firmly settling with Call of Cthulhu. There have been many other smaller RPG adventures over the years (such as Itra's By, Fabula, Home Brew Systems and Pendragon ) but they were all short lived. And then after a long board-game-filled hiatus and a growing appetite and yearning for the good old dices and their imaginative outcomes I was suddenly back with D&D, this time in the form of the new 5th edition.
After hosting a short campaign and finding the experience fun (sort of), but not exactly what I was looking for, and being aware of the OSR movement, much thanks to a plethora of incredible blogs and the youtube channels of Captain Corajus and Ben from Questing Beast, i decided to sell my 5e books and move on. Then, after ordering the incredible Yoon-Suin campaign setting and jumping on Gavin Norman's fabolus kickstarter, Old School Essentials, I have never looked back and really found a format I can truly embrace.
My first undertaking as a new born blogger will be to elaborate upon my experience with the 5e system and give a brief overview of the mini-campaign I ran, which was a mish-mash of the classic d&d module "Against the Cult of the Reptile God," the other classic module "The Trouble With Mylvin Wimbly," which was part of my old d&d Basic rule set and some ideas of my own.
Further on, I will provide in detail description of my on going Yoon-Suin campaign. I also have plans to start up a mega dungeon campaign at some point, perhaps Barrowmaze or Castle Xyntillan.
I am also working on a fantasy setting of my own. If time allows I will share information on this here, so stay tuned.
Happy gaming!
